ARZANAH SUPPORTS DIADETES AWARENESS (November 23, 2007)
Recent media reports indicated that the UAE has the second highest prevalence of diabetes in the world with over 20% of the population showing signs of it. Arzanah’s Student Council led a successful fund-raising effort to support the campaign. They also led faculty, staff and students in the Walk the Capital. Fight Diabetes, a five kilometer walkathonorganized in Abu Dhabi November 23, 2007. The walkathon was organized by Abu Dhabi’s Imperial College Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) in partnership with Emirates Foundation and Daman, the national health insurance company of Abu Dhabi.
Foundation 2 Provides a Forum for Discussion (November 22, 2007)
“Student’s View of Life and Lessons at PI” was the topic of discussion on November 22, 2007. English instructor Lynne Robinson’s Foundation 2 students provided for a much-anticipated discussion on their education thus far and their transitional experience from high school to higher education. The panel included students Marwa Al Maskari, Afra Al Qrain, Ahlam Al Mahri and Israa Maddi. The session was chaired by student Sara Al Mehi. An impressive turnout of Foundation instructors from English, computing, mathematics and sciences attended the event and engaged the panelists in a lively debate on instruction and course content in the Foundation 2 Program.
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING INVITES A RESEARCHER (November 19, 2007)
The Mechanical Engineering Program and Arzanah co-sponsored a luncheon meeting to welcome Dr. Azar Nazeri. Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Nazeri is a Research Manager at the University of Maryland (College Park) facilitating the Energy Education and Research Collaboration (EERC) with PI. Students had a chance to discuss issues related to women in engineering and their status in North American societies at large. Dr. Nazeri encouraged students to be strong believers in their chosen field and stressed the importance of being dedicated and committed to their profession. The event was organized by Dr. Valerie Eveloy, assistant professor of mechanical engineering.
NOBEL MUSEUM TOUR (November 15, 2007)
Under the themes CULTURES OF CREATIVITY, Student Activities provided some 40 students with a chance to visit (November 15, 2007) the current Nobel Museum exhibit held at the Emirates Palace. The centennial exhibit has been on an international tour since 2001 and has traveled to 13 countries. Since 1901, some 750 Laureates were awarded of which 33 were to women. The exhibit’s aim “is to spread knowledge, as well as to create interest and discussion around the natural sciences and culture, through creative learning and exhibition techniques, modern technology and elegant design.”
EAGE’S STUDENT LECTURE TOUR (November 15, 2007)
This is the first year that the European Association of Geologists and Engineers (EAGE) extends its Student Lecture Tour to the Middle East. Professor Alain-Yves Huc from the Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) presented a lecture on November 15, 2007 entitled “Geological History of CO2: Atmospheric Change and Natural Sequestration.” The presentation focused on the processes involved in the carbonate formation and their evolution with geological time. The lecture was organized and attended by the Director of Petroleum Geosciences Engineering, Dr. Karl Berteussen, and was joined by a number of interested faculty and students.
BlackBoard Training (November 15, 2007)
PI has announced the set-up of BlackBoard as the official e-learning system on campus. The system is intended to “create powerful learning content, facilitate student participation, communication and collaboration, and assess and evaluate student performance.” To this end Arzanah hosted one of two workshops organized by PI’s IT department on November 15, 2007. It was an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to test the new system and familiarize themselves with its various features. Already, a number of faculty have began their transition to BlackBoard and have reported that students are comfortable using the new system.
TUM President Visits Arzanah (November 11, 2007)
Arzanah was featured November 11, 2007 as The Petroleum Institute welcomed back Dr. Wolfgang Herrmann, president of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Dr. Hermann inaugurated Arzanah’s first LEADERS IN ENGINEERING SEMINAR (November 11, 2007) with a presentation highlighting TUM’s impressive history and development into one of the leading universities in Europe, and discussed the various steps taken by the university to encourage women to consider careers in engineering and applied sciences. Students engaged the guest speaker with a number of questions focusing on the status of women engineers in Germany and the options available at TUM for future graduate studies. Attending the lecture were Dr. Michael Ohadi (Chief Academic Officer and Acting Executive Director), Dr. Nadia Alhasani (Director of Arzanah) and a number of faculty and guests. Student Salma Al-Marzouqi introduced the speaker to the audience. Dr. Hermann began his visit to Arzanah with a tour of its facilities and had a chance to interact with faculty, students and staff. He expressed his admiration for the state-of-the-art laboratories and students’ enthusiasm.
Women in Engineering Seminar (November 7, 2007)
Foundation 2 at Arzanah held their second Women in Engineering Seminar November 7, 2007. An impressive representation of UAE women engineers from the oil and gas industry participated in the workshop. The four engineers shared with the audience their career paths and highlighted the particular aspects of their fields of engineering. Guests included Electrical Engineer Fatima Al Najjar (It Manager-ZADCO), Geoscientist Shamsa Al Maskari (Team Leader-ZADCO), Chemical Engineer Amal Al Ameri (Senior Project Coordinator for The Offshore Division-ADNOC), and Petroleum Engineer Budour Batiq (Reservoir Simulation Engineer-ZADCO). The seminar was moderated and guest speakers were presented by Foundation 2 students Fatima Ali, Sara Nasser, Sara Al Kalbani, Yasmeen Al Tamimi, and Mariam Al Rashed.
Students Take a Break at Dubai Wonderland (November 7, 2007)
With mid-terms over, Student Affairs planned its second social activity for Fall 2007, with a well-received trip to Dubai’s Wonderland (November 7, 2007). Over seventy students took advantage of this event under the guidance of Ms. Salwa Alweeshy, Recreation Officer.
Arzanah Students represent PI @ NAJAH (November 4-6, 2007)
Najah, a three-day education, careers and training event, was held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center, November 4-7, 2007. The Petroleum Institute joined some 100 educational institutes, training centers and select international companies with a large display. The event was an opportunity for PI to feature its programs and recruit students for 2008-2009 academic year. Five students from Arzanah volunteered to represent PI at the event: Khawla Al Manthari, Hayam Al Bloushi, Felwa Al Ameri, Ghena Al Hanai, and Amena Hasan. Ms. Al Manthari expressed her pride in being able to represent PI and appreciated the opportunity to highlight the various aspects of the Institute.
