PROFILE

Dr. Cornelis Peters joined the program in October 2008 as a Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering. He earned his bachelor (cum laude), master (cum laude), and Ph.D. degrees from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Dr. Peters is an expert in the areas of thermodynamics, phase equilibria, ionic liquids, hydrogen storage, gas hydrates and CO2-sequestration. He is well-known for his work in phase behavior and equilibria.

Dr. Peters is the author of more than 200 publications in refereed journals, among them one in Science. In addition, he is (co)editor of 6 books, 13 book chapters.  Two patents have been filed on his name. Besides serving as a reviewer of numerous papers and research proposals, he is a member of the editorial board of a couple of journals. Dr. Peters was the principal advisor of 17 Ph.D. and 45 MSc theses. Furthermore, he served worldwide on 25 Ph.D. committees as the principal external examiner. In addition, he was external examiner of 5 MSc theses and he supervised 35 extensive literature studies.

Dr. Peters has worldwide extensive collaborations. His current collaborations comprise Stanford and Vanderbilt University, University of Maryland, Colorado School of Mines, all of them in the USA. In addition, he has strong ties with the Center of Excellence at Tohoku University (Japan), the Universidad Nacional del Sur (Argentina), University of Nottingham (UK) and the University of Valladolid (Spain). He receives many invitations as a keynote, plenary and invited speaker. Also he is frequently asked to deliver short courses. He is involved in the organization of many conferences in his field. His recent research achievements are in the field of the application of ionic liquids in reactions and separations. Also the application of gas hydrates for hydrogen storage, CO2-sequestration and desalination of seawater has his active interest.
