The Chemistry Department is well equipped with modern analytical instruments such as FT-IR, UV and NMR spectrometers as well as GC and GC-MS. An ICP-MS instrument has just arrived to the Department.

ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) is an extremely useful tool in the petroleum industry as it is capable of investigating a wide range of samples varying from crude oils and bitumen to carbonate rocks and fluid inclusions. The main aim of acquiring an ICP-MS is to promote research that will be of interest to ADNOC and the PI. Collaborative research interests between ADNOC and the PI are ongoing, and from this perspective the engineering programs at PI have shown a keen interest in applying the instrument to a range of existing research studies. It is envisaged that such an instrument will equip engineering students with skills and experience in a range of applications that would definitely be an advantage to them in the oil industry.
