5th IEEE UAE Student Day at the PI
On May 8, 2010 it was the turn of The Petroleum Institute to host the IEEE UAE Student Day event. It was a day full of achievements and success, a feeling both the hosts and guests shared on that day.
The guests arrived to registration and coffee before joining an opening ceremony in which the Provost and Acting President of the Petroleum Institute, Dr. Michael Ohadi, gave welcoming remarks, followed by Dr. Majid Poshtan, Chair of the 5th IEEE UAE Student Day Organizing Committee, Dr. Abdurrahim El-Keib, Chair of Electrical Engineering Department, Dr. Hasan Al-Nashash, IEEE UAE Student Day Steering Committee Chair, and finally Dr. Mahmoud Al-Qutayri, IEEE UAE Student Activity Chair.
The spacious PI-ASAB sports complex housed all student projects from the various competitions. Judges made rounds to evaluate the different projects on display and to decide the winners. Guests were welcomed to lunch followed by a closing ceremony and award distribution.
New Participation Records
The 5th IEEE UAE Student Day at the PI featured record participation, both in number participating students and participating universities. There were a total of 216 participants coming from13 different universities (136 male and 80 female electrical engineering students). A total of 66 teams of students competed in the 6 competitions. Several judging teams, consisting mostly of faculty from the participating universities, were split among the 6 competitions. There were 78 visitors including family members and non-participating students.
