The IEEE/PES at Both the International and the National Levels and the Electrical Engineering Department, The Petroleum Institute, Celebrate the 125th Anniversary at the PI, October 28-29, 2009

The Electrical Engineering Department at the Petroleum Institute (PI) has organized jointly with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers /Power and Energy Society (IEEE/PES) two events in conjunction with its fall 2009 IEEE/PES Executive Committee meeting, which was held for the first time outside North America in Middle East and Africa regions. In addition to the members of the IEEE/PES Executive Committee, the meeting involved the Chairs of the IEEE/PES Chapters in the Middle East and North Africa. The event was also in celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the IEEE/PES.
The IEEE is a global non-profit technical association with presence in 160 countries and 375,000 members. The IEEE/PES is a worldwide, non-profit association of more than 24,000 individuals engaged in all aspects of power and energy industry. More about the IEEE can be found at http://www.ieee.org/ and about the IEEE/PES at http://www.ieee-pes.org/.
Over 120 persons were in attendance, including researchers, practicing engineers from ADNOC OPCOs (ADCO, ADMA, NDC, TAKREER, ZADCO, GASCO), ADWEA companies (TRANSCO, ADDC, AADC), DEWA, and others including Saudi Electricity Company, GE, Green Energy, and the Regulation and Supervision Bureau, faculty and students from the PI and several other academic institutions (MASDAR Institute of Science and Technology, HCT, Sultan Qaboos University, University of Bahrain, University of Al Fateh).
Day I of the event (October 28, 2009) began with an upbeat opening ceremony. Following a recitation of verses from The Quran with a slide projection of their translation in English, opening speeches were delivered by Dr. Michael Ohadi (Provost and Acting President of PI), Dr. Abdurrahim El-Keib (Director of Electrical Engineering Department at the PI), Dr. Eessa Bastaki (Chair, IEEE UAE Section), and Mrs. Wanda Reder (President IEEE/PES), in which all emphasized the importance of this meeting and how it intimately addresses important current topics in the field of electric power and energy.
During the opening ceremony, Dr. El-Keib had his work in the area of energy and power recognized and appreciated by the IEEE/PES. He was awarded the “Outstanding Engineer of the Year Award” by the President of the IEEE/PES “For Leadership and Excellence in Power Engineering Research, Outstanding Contributions to the Power and Energy Education, and Dedicated Service to the Engineering Profession.”
Also, during the opening ceremony, the President of the IEEE/PES was given a memento by the IEEE Section of UAE in appreciation of the society’s invaluable and numerous contributions.
This event also featured:
Technical Tutorials: Five IEEE/PES Distinguished Lecturer tutorials on important power and energy issues delivered by globally recognized researchers in the field of electric power and energy.
Women in Engineering Seminars: Four Women in Engineering seminars delivered by highly recognized and well accomplished women engineers.
