The IEEE/PES at Both the International and the National Levels and the Electrical Engineering Department, The Petroleum Institute, Celebrate the 125th Anniversary at the PI, October 28-29, 2009

Women in Engineering Seminars
Day II of the event was focused on women in engineering. It included four seminars targeting both women engineers and those who are on track to become women engineers. The theme of the seminars was to promote and encourage attendees to strive for excellence. There were over 200 in attendance, including practicing engineers from ADNOC OPCOs (ADCO, ADMA, NDC, TAKREER, ZADCO, GASCO), ADWEA companies (TRANSCO, ADDC, AADC), DEWA, and faculty and students from the PI and several other academic institutions (HCT, Al Hosn University, Zayed University, Abu Dhabi University). The seminars were delivered by highly recognized and well accomplished women engineers. The speakers were Mrs. Wanda Redder, the IEEE/PES President, Mrs. Meliha Selak, Vice President-Chapter, Mrs. Cherri Warren, Secretary, and Dr. Noel Shulz, Treasurer and President Elect 2011. Issues addressed included leadership, being a women engineer, and importance of networking and involving in professional societies. The seminars titles are listed below; speaker bios can be found at the end of this report.
- “Professional society involvement and the benefits to a career through involvement-PES as an example.”
By Mrs. Wanda Reder (President IEEE/PES)
- “Networking for Support and Advancement of Your Career As women.”
By Dr. Noel Schulz (Treasurer, President-Elect Candidate for 2010-11, IEEE/PES)
- “My experience as a female in the power industry”
By Mrs. Cheri Warren (Secretary IEEE/PES)
- ”My experience as an EE and how EE is suited for the women”
By Mrs. Meliha Selak (Vice President IEEE/PES)
The IEEE-WES Affinity Group at The Petroleum Institute’s Electrical Engineering Department was heavily involved in the event, which was hosted in Arzanah (the PI Women’s Campus). Each speaker was introduced by a PI Electrical Engineering student, who is also a member of the PI IEEE-WES Affinity Group. The students are: Nada Al Awadhi (IEEE WIE Student President), Maha Yonis (IEEE WIE Student Vice President for Public Affairs), Thuraya Al Hanaei (IEEE WIE Student Vice President for Technical Affairs) and Rehab Bani Hashem (IEEE WIE Student Member).
The speakers touched on important issues and were a great inspiration to all in attendance. They described their career journey in the engineering profession and showed how all is possible. This experience had a great impact not only the attendees but also on the speakers themselves who had a different perception than what they had left with and were impressed by the size, and the quality and enthusiasm of the group of women engineers and engineering students who were in attendance. Each in their own words commented that “the event would never be forgotten and that it had a positive and lasting impact on them.”
