Dr. Igor Boiko received MSc degree (on a six-year program with included BSc degree) from Tula State University (Russia) in Electro-mechanical engineering with specialization in Control Systems. His PhD dissertation was devoted to the development of design methods for high-performance electro-pneumatic control systems. In 1998 he moved to Canada and started working in the petro-chemical industry in the area of distributed control systems and process control. He worked for such companies as Honeywell, ChevronTexaco, Syncrude Canada. He developed a number of innovative control applications successfully used in the industry, among which the most important are the adaptive control system for the sulphur recovery process, and modified relay feedback test used in controller tuning software. Dr. Boiko also led the design of control systems on such Canadian mega-projects as Syncrude UE-1 and Shell Albian Sands. In 2006 he joined the University of Calgary in the capacity of an Adjunct Professor continuing working in the industry. He conducted research in the area of discontinuous control and sliding mode control in particular, and in process control. He developed a novel frequency-domain theory of discontinuous control systems, frequency-domain methods of analysis and design of sliding-mode control systems, which became the subject of his DSc dissertation defended in 2009. Dr. Boiko has over 100 publications, with a high number of papers published in top-rated journals on control theory. Dr. Boiko is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of IEEE Technical Committee on Variable Structure and Sliding Mode Control.
