ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Organized jointly with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers /Power and Energy Society (IEEE/PES), the Electrical Engineering Department held a major event at the Petroleum Institute (PI) in celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the IEEE/PES. The event included the fall 2009 IEEE/PES Executive Committee meeting, held for the first time outside North America, as well as technical tutorials, and seminars on women in engineering by Distinguished IEEE/PES Lecturers. The Electrical Engineering Department has received initial accreditation for its Master of Science degree program in Electrical Engineering. Click here to learn more about Graduate Studies in Electrical Engineering at the PI.

Three EE faculty members (Dr. Lana El Chaar, Dr. Abdul Rahiman Beig, Dr. Lisa Lamont) have recently received major PI-Excellence Awards at the PI 2009 Commencement Celebration. Read more.

Dr. Majid Poshtan, Assistant Professor, the Electrical Engineering  Department, and Mr. Mohamed Ghazi, a PI-EE graduate, were recognized by the EE Department for receiving the 2009 ADCO Paper Award for their paper on “Intelligent Distributed Autonomous Electric Energy System for UAE”.

The EE Department has established new labs for research and teaching. These are the Power Electronics/Power Quality/Electric Drives lab, the High Voltage Lab, and the Real-time Power System Simulator Lab.

The EE Department has received external funding for the research project “Mitigation of Power Quality Problems of the Variable Speed Drives for National Drilling Company System (NDC)”. Click here to visit the Ongoing Research/Industry Projects at the EE Department.

Dr. Abdurrahim El-Keib was recognized by the PI for receiving the “Outstanding Engineer of the Year Award” by the President of the IEEE/PES. Read more.
Dr. Mahmoud Meribout was invited and served as an External Examiner for a PhD dissertation at University Blaise Pascal of Science & Technologies, Clermont Ferrand, France. The title of the dissertation was “Design of a Low-Cost Localization System using GPS.”
Dr. Abdurrahim El-Keib was recognized at the General Meeting of the IEEE/PES held in Calgary, Canada in July 2009 for his Distinguished Service to the IEEE/PES/Energy Development and Power Generation Committee. Read more.
Electrical Engineering students win the First Place Award at the Honeywell International Student Competition in process industry innovation in Berlin, Germany. Read more.
Four Electrical Engineering student teams win 4 awards for the PI at the 4th IEEE-UAE Students’ Day competitions, which involved ten UAE Universities. Read more.
EE Students participate in the prestigious competition: “Made-In-Arab-World”, held in Cairo, Egypt. Read more.
