Overview


The new Advanced University Placement (AUP) department has been designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to be a successful engineering university student. The program gives the opportunity for some students to gain credit for some freshman courses and complete their degree earlier.

Q: Which courses will I take and how many hours will I study?
A: You will take five courses:

AP Calculus 5 hours per week
AP Chemistry 5 hours in the classroom per week, and 3 in the laboratory 
AP Physics 5 hours in the classroom per week, and 3 in the laboratory
English 12 hours per week (18 hours for Intensive English)
Computing 3 hours per week

Q: How are the courses organized and what skills will I develop?
A: You will have standard lessons in the classroom and learn how to do experiments in laboratories but you will also do a lot of project work.

You will develop your study skills, time management skills and critical thinking skills which are very important for studying at university. You will also learn how to work independently and in teams.

You will be given regular homework, assignments, quizzes and tests that will help you understand how well you are doing.

Q: How long is the program?
A: The AUP courses last for one year. AP exams for calculus, chemistry and physics take place in the first two weeks of May. English and Computing courses finish at the end of May but students who need more time to pass the courses can continue studying for another 8 week module.

Q: What is expected of the students?
A: You are going to be a professional engineer so you need to develop good habits!

  • Be serious about your work
  • Be organized and keep a portfolio
  • Attend regularly and turn up on time
  • Be prepared for your classes – make sure you have everything you need
  • Be polite with your classmates and teachers
  • Talk with your teachers, especially if you are having problems.

Q: How do I get to the degree program?
A:

  • You need to score 500 or more on the TOEFL (or iBT 61 or Academic IELTS 5.5) and maintain at least a C grade on your English and Computing courses.
  • AP scores of 3, 4 or 5 will give you credit for some of the freshman courses on the degree program.
  • If you score a 2 on each of your AP exams you will be permitted to begin freshman courses on the degree program. You will need to maintain a letter grade average of ‘C’ or above on those freshman courses.
  • You may be permitted to begin freshman courses if you score a 1 on the AP exams but maintained a ‘C’ on your course work. You would also need to maintain a letter grade average of ‘C’ or above on those freshman courses.
