English Course Outcomes

ENGL 030 Intensive English
In this semester long course of study, students further develop the English language skills they were taught in secondary school. Students focus on improving their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. During the module, students

  • listen to and read texts related to general study skills
  • develop basic academic speaking and writing skills
  • learn academic vocabulary and grammar
  • learn to describe objects and processes
  • develop  team building skills

(Prerequisite: Placement Test)

ENGL 032 English Module II
In this module, students continue to develop their English language skills. Reading, writing, listening and speaking activities are integrated to give students opportunities to gain a more holistic understanding of ways in which academic language is used. During the module, students

  • listen to and read texts related to mechanics (physics), and health, safety and the environment
  • conduct academic research
  • write about their research findings
  • present their research findings orally
  • develop their TOEFL test taking skills
  • develop team leadership and team building skills

(Prerequisite: Placement Test OR completion of Intensive English)

ENGL 033 English Module III
In this module, students extend their knowledge of academic English and broaden their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Students listen to and read texts pertaining to the oil industry. During this module, students

  • take notes and annotate academic texts
  • conduct research on a topic related to the oil industry
  • write about their research findings
  • present their research findings orally
  • develop their TOEFL test taking skills
  • apply leadership and team skills in an authentic situation

(Prerequisite: Completion of Module II)

ENGL 034 English Module IV
In this module, students demonstrate that they have the English language skills necessary to meet the requirements of the Petroleum Institute’s Freshman classes. During this module, students

  • listen to, read and summarize academic texts related to alternative sources of energy
  • attend discussions led by Freshman professors relative to academic life in the PI
  • develop the skills conducive to achieving a TOEFL score greater than 500

(Prerequisite: Completion of Module III)

The following courses run as and when required:

ENGL 031 English Module I
In this module, students continue to build upon the English language skills gained in ENGL 030. Reading, writing, listening and speaking activities are integrated to give students continuing opportunities to gain a more holistic understanding of ways in which academic language is used. During the module, students

  • listen to and read texts related to engineers and engineering
  • conduct academic research
  • write about their research findings
  • present their research findings orally
  • develop their TOEFL test taking skills
  • develop team leadership and team building skills

(Prerequisite: completion of Intensive English)

ENGL 037 English Module VI
This is an academic readiness module for students who have already achieved a TOEFL score greater than 500 but still need to refine their academic English skills prior to enrolling in Communication 101. During this module, students

  • develop academic research skills
  • listen to, read and summarize academic texts related to the commercial viability of alternative sources of energy
  • write about their research findings
  • present their research findings orally
  • develop academic study and time management skills

(Prerequisite: TOEFL score >500, or IELTS score >5.5.)

ENGL 099 ADVANCED TOEFL PREPARATION COURSE
This is an intensive course specifically designed for PI students who have successfully completed the necessary English course work, but have not yet achieved a TOEFL score of 500 or more. Students practice listening, structure, reading and TOEFL test taking skills as well as time management strategies.

(Prerequisites: PreTOEFL/TOEFL ≤499)
