Welcome to AUP English
The AUP English course is a modular program that helps high school graduates prepare for the PI four-year engineering degree program. The AUP English course also works to support AUP Math and Science to ensure student success in all subject areas.
The course consists of different 8 week modules. Depending on their performance in an initial placement test, students are expected to complete between 1 and 6 modules of language study.
Students work individually and in teams to develop listening, reading and note-taking skills, as well as writing and presentation skills, all of which are based on themes related to their future careers such as:
- Maths, Science and Learning
- Engineers and Engineering
- The Science of Mechanics
- Introduction to the Petroleum Industry
- Alternative Sources of Energy
- Transport, Energy and the Environment
Published and in-house texts, audio and video recordings, web-based/electronic and live lectures are all used to help students learn. Dictionaries and TOEFL practice materials are also made available. The Institute has a growing library and students regularly visit the Independent Learning Center to find relevant learning materials. Computer facilities provide access to a wide variety of electronic resources.
Students are assessed on a regular basis. Weekly quizzes are the norm, and writing tests are also a feature of students' continuous assessment.
To exit the program, students are required to achieve a minimum 500 on the TOEFL, pass an examination as well as successfully complete the English course of study with a minimum of C. These requirements serve as criteria for entrance into the Freshman Arts & Sciences Program.
