AUP Mathematics & Computing Course Outcomes
Mathematics Course Outcomes
CALC 010 AP Calculus 1
In addition to encouraging the understanding of important mathematical concepts this course is designed to develop in each student the ability to solve problems and enhance their capacity for critical thinking. Topics include:
- Derivatives of polynomial functions
- Derivatives of trigonometric functions
- Derivatives of logarithmic, and exponential functions
- Rates of Change and Limits
- Applications of Differentiation
In working through this course students will become familiar with the format of the AP examination and learn strategies to optimize his/her score. The use of a graphics calculator is an integral part of this course.
CALC 011 AP Calculus 2
This course as a continuation of the AP Calculus 1 course provides ongoing students with similar learning experiences covering techniques and applications of derivatives of polynomial, trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential functions. Topics include:
- The Definite Integral
- Applications of Integration
- Differential Equations
- Mathematical Modeling
- Review for AP Exam
CALC015 and CALC016 AUP Calculus
AUP calculus begins with a thorough grounding in the algebra and trigonometry basics required for the differential and integral calculus. The course includes and exposure to practical problems where solutions call for application of calculus. For example, we consider optimization, error estimation, projectile motion, calculation of area and volumes, and qualitative and quantitative analysis of graphs. Topics are developed as follows:
Successful students will be well prepared for the complete undergraduate mathematics sequence.
Computing Course Outcomes
COMP030 Computing Applications 1
These Computing topics and applications will be covered in this course:
- File management
- Word processing and advanced features of MS Word
- Spreadsheet applications for analyzing information using MS Excel
- Making clear presentations using MS PowerPoint
COMP100 Freshman Computing Applications
This course covers important applications and programming needed for students who begin in the AP stream, who demonstrate fluency in Word and Power Point or directly enter the freshman year.
These Computing topics and applications will be covered in this course:
- Intermediate and Advanced functions of spreadsheet applications for analyzing information using MS Excel
- Basic programming skills using VB scripting in Excel macros
(Pre-requisite – Completion of COMP030, successful placement testing for entry into AP, successful placement testing on Word and Power Point, or direct entry to the Freshman Program)
