2011-05-07: Joint ME/EE undergraduate team wins first place in the 2nd Engineering Student Renewable Energy Competition |
The UAE University hosted the 2nd Engineering Student Renewable Energy Competition targeting undergraduate students only. The key objectives of this event was to promote renewable energy concepts through students’ projects, provide experience in applying engineering concepts for renewable energy, exchange experiences between engineering students, and enhance engineering students’ understanding of the impact of renewable energy on this society. ADNOC and Masdar Institute were the platinum and golden sponsors of this event, respectively.
There were 36 projects in total from eleven institutions from the UAE (Ajman University of Science and Technology, American University of Dubai, American University of Sharjah, BITS Pilani - Dubai Campus, Bolton University, HCT- Abu Dhabi, HCT- Al-Ain, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, Petroleum Institute, University of Sharjah and United Arab Emirates University). The judges were from ADNOC, Masdar Power, Masdar Institute, the Environmental Agency of Abu Dhabi, DEWA, Luca Nulle GMBH, and others.
The first round of judging resulted in twelve (12) semi-finalists with two of them being from PI. The project from the PI team that received the first place was “Outdoor Automated Solar Powered Recycling System”. These projects were the result of collaboration between both mechanical and electrical engineering departments. The mechanical engineering student team members were Mr. Khaled Al Ali, Mr. Yahya Qaroot, and Mr. Anouar Zebidi. The Electrical Engineering student team members were Mr. Khaled Saleh, Mr. Kamal Al Khuffash, Mr. Abdulla Al Uabaidi, Mr. Mohamed El Menoufia. The winning team was mentored by Dr. Ebrahim Al Hajri and Dr. Hamad Karki from the Mechanical Engineering department and Dr. Lisa Lamont and Dr. Lana El Chaar from Electrical Engineering.
