SPE Student Chapter at the PI
The Student Chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is active in our department. The official opening of our Chapter took place on October 12th, 2004. The Chapter was inaugurated by Mr. Ali Al-Jarwan, SPE Middle East Regional Director and Mr. Mark Rubin, SPE Executive Director.
Student chapters are formed by groups of students pursuing petroleum engineering or related curriculum at a college or university. SPE currently has more than 160 student chapters in countries around the world. Each chapter is affiliated with an SPE section (Abu Dhabi section in our case), allowing students to interact with practicing professionals and benefit from technology discussions at section meetings and chapters organize different activities broadly divided into technical and social functions. Examples of major technical activities include field trips, company visits, technical presentations delivered by industry professionals or student paper contests that offer students the chance to showcase their research results and presentation skills, competing with other students for honors both regionally and internationally. Social activities can take different forms depending on invention of chapter officers and resources available and include BBQ dinners, dhow cruises, sport events etc.
Since its official inauguration in 2004, our chapter was involved in a number of activities of this kind such as trip to Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, participation in MEOS conference in Bahrain in 2007, in IPTC conference in Doha, Qatar, 2005, and in ADIPEC at Abu Dhabi, Oct. 2010. Members of our Chapter regularly attended technical presentations organized by SPE Section of Abu Dhabi. On several occasions we hosted technical presentations at the PI. For example, in September 2007 we hosted the SPE Ambassador Lecture presentation delivered by young professional from Saudi Aramco, in 2009 our chapter was visited by the 2009 SPE President Dr. Leo Roodhart, and in February 2011 our chapter was visited by the SPE board of directors. We also hosted student paper competition at the PI in November 2007 and send students to student paper competitions organized by the UAE university in Alain, UAE and by Texas A&M University, Doha campus, and elsewhere. Our students participated with success and more details can be found in PE News.
Initially there were only male students involved in Chapter activities but since PI visit by Dr. Roodhart female students also started to participate. There were technical presentations organized for female students at Arzanah campus of the PI, the female group of the Chapter was formed and currently about 45 female students are members of the society.
Future plans include visits to other chapters in the region, organizing the Petroleum Engineering Sports Day regularly and other social and technical activities.
