Dr. Jorge Salgado Gomes has almost 30 years of industry experience and is currently occupying the PARTEX Chaired Professor position in Petroleum Engineering at the Petroleum Institute, Abu Dhabi. Because of his previous background in GeoSciences, Dr. Gomes is splitting his teaching and R&D activities with the GeoSciences Department at the Petroleum Institute. Prior to joining PI, he was in a leadership position with ADCO (Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations), on secondment from his parent company (PARTEX OIL & GAS). During 2009, he was a part time professor at the Petroleum Institute, where he lectured the Overview of the Oil & Gas Industry course. While at ADCO, Dr. Gomes was involved in many subsurface studies and more recently was leading the implementation of the Field Development Plan (FDP) on a mature oil field (Asab), with a sustainable oil production of 290,000 bpd.
Previously, Dr. Gomes worked for BP Minerals (Portugal), EDMA (Portugal), QP (Qatar), Hot-Engineering (Austria, Libya), and PARTEX (Lisbon), occupying many technical and leadership positions. During his career, Dr. Gomes was exposed to several development projects in many onshore and offshore fields (Dukhan, Maydan Mahzen and Id El Sharji fields in Qatar, Sarir C-Main and L-Fields in Libya, Rumaitha-Shanayel, Al-Dabbiyah and Asab in Abu Dhabi). While working for QP in Qatar (1998-99), Dr. Gomes was responsible for two gas discoveries at the Diyab sector of the Dukhan Field. The discovered gas, a total of 0.5 TCF from Hamlah and Khuff formations, was aimed at future EOR projects.
Dr. Gomes holds a BSc and MSc in Geological Sciences from Oporto University (Portugal) and a MEng and PhD in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, UK). He is a member of SPE, AAPG, EAGE, SCA and has participated with presentations in more than 15 technical conferences. Some of his papers received international awards. He is also the co-author of a book about the oil & gas industry, “O Universo da Indústria Petrolífera - Da Pesquisa à Refinação”, adopted as a key University textbook in Angola and Brazil. An active member of SPE and EAGE, he has served on many sessions and committees, either as a session chair, discussion leader, keynote speaker or member of technical programs. While at ADCO, he was a member of CAMS task force team responsible for the deployment of a Competency Assurance Management System (CAMS) for all OPCO’s geoscientists and was also responsible for the implementation of ADCO’s Standard Operating Procedures for key business drivers (Oil-In-Place calculations and Reservoir Rock Typing). For these and other activities, namely people development, he received annual awards for excellence and outstanding performances during 2004-2005, 2008 and 2009 periods.
Dr. Gomes was a 1992-recipent of the SPE Award (1st prize) for the best technical paper among all the European participants and also the 1991-recipient of the Petroleum Institute (UK) award for the outstanding research project in the Petroleum Engineering (MEng) program.
