Richard holds a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and a Master of Science in Physics from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, USA.
His master’s thesis, Infrared Laser Induced Reaction of CF2Cl2 (Journal of American Chemical Society 97:9/4-75)] was published in the American Chemical Society Journal shortly after graduation.
Having worked for 9 years with Schlumberger, an international technical company and leader in wire-line logging, using state of the art electrical sensor equipment and computer analysis to determine reservoir properties, Richard brings to the Petroleum Department his field experience as a Schlumberger General Field Engineer in California and South America (providing engineering services to major oil companies, e.g. Exxon, Shell, BP, etc.). Progressing through a series of hands-on international positions from Field Engineer, Senior Field Engineer, General Field Engineer, Sales Engineer, Engineer Instructor and Manager, he worked with clients to help evaluate oil and gas reservoirs.
Before joining the Petroleum Engineering Department, Richard was teaching Physics and Geology in the Foundation Department at the PI. His teaching philosophy is that all students can learn and each student deserves an instructor who is willing to put forth his best effort to help him/her achieve his/her full potential. With his many years in both Industry and Education, Richard has found it important to continue experimenting with technology in the classroom to help illustrate difficult scientific concepts. To do so, he has worked with the PI media specialist to make movies, moodle web page videos, and lecture audios to help students become better informed learners with regard to their majors, program studies or personal interests.
Currently, Richard is teaching the ‘Overview of the Petroleum Industry’ course to PI students. Other duties involve being academic advisor to over 40 women Petroleum Engineering majors and helping the PE department with various teaching assignments.
He maintains active professional associations & memberships with:
Society of Petroleum Engineers (include assisting the PI student SPE chapter)
Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
National Science Teachers Association
