Petrographic Microscopes

The Petroleum Geosciences Program has 24 Olympus BX41 petrographic microscopes.

Petroleum Geosciences has two Olympus BX51 microscopes equipped with high-resolution digital cameras (12 megapixels). The digital cameras are connected to a PC and a projection system. This allows the projection of thin section images onto a screen during lectures and labs.

Point Counter
Students can also make use of a digital SteppingStage point counter mounted on an Olympus BX41 polarizing microscope. The point counter is used to determine percentage of area occupied by each component mineral in a thin section.

Binocular Microscopes
28 Olympus and 42 Prior binocular microscopes are available to students in freshman and sophomore geosciences classes.
