14/May/2009: Geosciences students WIN the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Regional Challenge Bowl for the second consecutive year. The competition was hosted at the PI on Thursday 14th of May 2009.

As winners they will represent the region in the Global Competition that this year will be held in Houston, Texas.

On May 7th 2009, the newly established Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Student Chapter in Abu Dhabi, based at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi, held the Middle East Student Challenge Bowl Competition. The Challenge Bowl competition is held annually throughout the world. Winners of each regional competition are sponsored to attend the final leg of the competition, which is held during the SEG’s Annual Meeting. In March 2008 the Petroleum Institute (PI) team won the regional competition during the GeoArabia Conference in Bahrain. In November 2008 the PI team attended the final leg of the competition during the SEG Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
The 2009 Middle East Student Challenge Bowl was sponsored by and held at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi. The contestants consisted of four teams; two form the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi and two from the Sultan Qaboos University in Oman.. In October 2009, the winning team, fully sponsored by the Petroleum Institute, will fly to Houston to attend the SEG 2009 Annual Meeting and take part in the final leg of the competition.
