Geology and hydrocarbon/mineral potential of Somaliland
M.Y. Ali

Summary

In this project seismic, gravity, well, outcrop and structure data have been used to determine the petroleum systems, coal and mineral potential of Somaliland. These data demonstrate that the country has favourable stratigraphy, structure, oil shows and hydrocarbon source rocks as well as bituminous coal and metallic minerals. In addition, this project aims to unravel the tectonic evolution of Gulf of Aden and surrounding areas.

So far I published four papers (Ali, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 – see my publication list) and I plan to conduct more research and fieldwork in this topic. This project has highly impacted in the region. The results of the project are used as a reference for the geology and tectonic of the region and have led to an increase exploration activities in the region.
