Sustainability Day and HSE Awareness week, April 2011

PI’s Sustainability Day and HSE Awareness week was held on April 17 - 20, 2011. Expertise from the field was invited to do presentations on various health topics including “General Nutrition Guidelines”, “Cardiovascular Disease - What Is Your Risk?”,  “The Impact of Obesity on Fitness For Work”, and “Smoking”.

A wide range of activities unfolded across campus, including:

  • Student research presentations on sustainability
  • Health check-ups
  • An anti-smoking campaign
  • Hostel evacuation drills with Civil Defense and ADNOC Clinic

The event was well attended by the PI community and PI well wishers including OPCO senior managers.

The Sustainability Day (April 18) began with opening remarks by Dr. Clarence Rodrigues, PI’s HSE Manager and Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Clarence briefed the attendees on the sustainability initiatives at PI. In included an update on the PACT project that was funded by the Emirates Foundation in which faculty, students and staff were able to estimate and track their individual carbon footprints. This was followed by Dr. Ismail Tag, Senior Vice President and Provost who emphasized the significance of health to the PI community and especially our students.

The key note presentation was by Dr. Sherif Bakir, Consultant Cardiologist and Section Head of the Noninvasive Lab at Shaik Khalifa Medical City. Dr. Sherif, in his presentation titled “Cardiovascular Disease, What Is Your Risk?”, discussed the significance of a healthy lifestyle and outlined the reasons for increased risks of heart disease. This was then followed by student research presentations related to the theme of the day.

Sara Ismail, Nutritionist, Lively Abu Dhabi,  delivered an informative presentation on “General Nutrition Guidelines” and answered all nutrition related questions raised by the participants.

Dr. Omeir El-Nagieb, Occupational Health Specialist, ADNOC Medical Team talked about the “Impact of Obesity on Fitness For Work”. He raised awareness and concern about the increasing number of cases of obesity in the UAE and provided plausible reasons for the same.

Dr. Abdul Razzak Alkaddour, Consultant, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City made a one-hour presentation on “Smoking” where he discussed the health effects of smoking and described various methods of quitting smoking.

The ADNOC Clinic provided health check-ups, such as blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar level testing and BMI evaluations.
