About the Program

The Academic Bridge Program aims to improve students' English skills. The program focuses on speaking, listening, reading and writing, and study skills. Our multi-national and highly qualified faculty is available to give ABP students all the support they need.

Vision

The vision of the Academic Bridge Program is to develop and maintain a leading center of academic excellence in the preparation of students for undergraduate studies in Engineering and Applied Sciences.

The mission of the Academic Bridge Program is to provide students with the necessary knowledge, skills and proficiency in English consistent with success in engineering and science studies.


Program Requirements

    Students are placed into the appropriate ABP course based on their CEPA scores. Entry scores for each ABP level are shown in the table below:

    *Non-nationals need a 6.5 IELTS score or 79 in IBT TOEFL to enter freshman courses.

    Exit from the English program requires students to meet two requirements:

    1. Passing the ABP course in which they are currently enrolled

    2. Achieving the required IELTS or TOEFL IBT score for Freshman entrance


Course Overview

The mission of the English curriculum is to help learners to develop their English language skills to succeed in their undergraduate studies. After completing the English curriculum, students will be able to:

  • listen to short and long conversations/lectures ;

  • speak clearly in class presentations and answer questions;

  • read critically; and

  • write a variety of texts using notes and reference material.

Our facilities include fully-equipped language classrooms, computer laboratories, and an Independent Learning Center on both the male and female campuses.


Online Program

Achieve 3000

Achieve3000 is a program that develops reading skills. Students first take a test to check their reading level. Then, interesting non-fiction articles are sent to you at your reading level. There are also vocabulary, comprehension and writing practice activities for each article. Increase your reading and critical thinking skills to have success at the PI and beyond!

Blackboard

Blackboard helps students learn more effectively inside and outside the classroom. Through Blackboard, students have access to course content and assignments. They can also stay in touch with their classmates or instructors and easily track their grades.

Quizlet

Quizlet is based on the old flash card principle. It can help students learn the definition and spelling of words. Quizlet can also be used to create practice tests made up of multi-choice, true false, fill the blank, and matching questions.

Kahoot

Kahoot! is a game-based learning platform that makes language learning fun. It consists of multiple choice questions in a quiz, discussion, or survey format. It can be created based on any topic, language, or level. It’s a competitive game played by the whole class together. Kahoot! generates good-natured competition and always proves popular whenever it’s used.


FYE Bridge Overview

The FYE Bridge program  helps students have an enjoyable and productive first year in university. To do this, the FYE Bridge provides students with skills, support, and social opportunities.

FYE Bridge focuses on the "3 S's" – SkillsSuccess, and Socialize.

FYE Bridge – SKILLS

The SKILLS part of the FYE Bridge is about developing students' skills as successful learners. Students attend workshops and seminars designed to help them learn and play a more active role in their own learning.   

These are some of the workshops that are offered:

  • The Transition: From high school to ABP and beyond

  • Setting and reaching your goals

  • Managing your time for a better university experience

  • Improving your English? There's an app for that!

  • Study skills for the successful student

  • Developing test-taking skills and test anxiety

FYE Bridge – SUCCESS

FYE Bridge provides students with a number of opportunities to increase their chances of academic success. Support is available through many resources on campus, including the library, Independent Learning Center (ILC), and tutorial centers. ABP students are also supported by academic advisors and counsellors.

Some resources and activities offered to ABP students include:

  • Counselling Sessions

  • One to one academic advising sessions

  • One on one or small group tutorial sessions

  • Success strategy sessions

  • Motivational speakers

  • Library, ILC and PI language development software

FYE Bridge – SOCIALIZE

FYE Bridge SOCIALIZE is all about creating a sense of belonging in the PI community. SOCIALIZE events will help students build the friendships and relationships that are an important part of their PI experience. They will ensure that students have a great deal of fun.

Some examples of the extra and co-curricular activities include:

  • Charitable donation competitions

  • Health awareness campaigns

  • Cultural demonstrations

  • ABP and PI Club fairs

  • Community outreach activities

  • Sports and fitness activities

TOEFL / IELTS

What TOEFL or IELTS score do I need to move to Freshman from ABP?
You need to TOEFL (iBT 61) or IELTS-Academic Module (overall band of 6.0) from approved testing center.

Where do I register for an official TOEFL or IELTS?
Students can register for the AMIDEAST TOEFLs hosted by the PI in the SOS office . Students can also take a TOEFL or IELTS from an approved testing center. The approved testing centers are listed in the table below.

Once a semester the PI also runs an IELTS exam on both the Male and female campuses.

What happens if I get my TOEFL (iBT 61) or IELTS-Academic Module (overall band of 6.0) in the middle of the semester?
Students who achieve their TOEFL or IELTS mid-semester will continue in their classes in ABP. They will start as freshman the following semester.

Academic Bridge Program

What is ABP?
ABP stands for Academic Bridge Program. The ABP is for students who don't yet meet the English requirement for Freshman Arts & Sciences.

When you enter the ABP English program, you will study English for 20 hours per week. You will study in the ABP program until you meet the entrance admissions requirements of the Freshman Arts & Sciences Program.

How do I move from ABP to freshman?
You need to complete your current ABP course and gain TOEFL (iBT 61) or IELTS-Academic Module (overall band of 6.0) administered by an approved center.

How many times can I repeat a level in ABP? 
You can only repeat a given level once.  You are allowed to be in the program a total of 4 semesters if you start at the English 010 level. If you do not to get the necessary admissions score while enrolled in the ABP program, you will have 8 months to independently get TOEFL (iBT 61) or IELTS-Academic Module (overall band of 6.0) in order to be admitted as a freshman.

What is CAMS?
CAMS is the learning management system used by the PI. In the CAMS student portal, you can check your classes, grades, attendance, and much more.

Will my grades in the ABP affect my overall GPA when I move to freshman year?
No. Your grades in the ABP do not affect your overall GPA.

Attendance

What is the attendance policy? 
Attendance is required. Students are expected to come to all classes and to be on time.

What if I am too sick to attend class? What should I do?

A student who is not in the classroom is considered absent, no matter what the reason.

If you are too sick to attend class, you need to bring your medical paperwork to the Attendance Records Coordinator (ARC).

Student Office Services

Where are the SOS offices?
Student Office Services (SOS) operate two centers: one for male students in the main male academic building (BuHasa), and one for female students in the female academic building (Arzanah - 006). A wide range of services are offered to students at the centers.

What does the SOS office do?
Students may apply for and receive their ID cards, parking access cards, pay fees and fines, submit official forms and documents as well as get or receive locker keys and other general information.

Independent Learning Center

What is the ILC?
The Independent Learning Center (ILC) provides a range of services, facilities, materials, and resources designed to help you learn more easily.

Advisors / Counselors

Why do I need an advisor?
When you join our PI Bridge Program, the ABP assigns you to an instructor who will be your academic advisor. This advisor will be available to you during advising hours to help you with study skills, TOEFL advice, and PI policies. Your advisor will be an essential source of information during your time in the ABP.

What does my advisor do?
Your advisor monitors your academic performance and attendance regularly and will help you with any issues or problems that arise during your time in the ABP.

How do I find out who my advisor is?
The name of your advisor will appear on your CAMS page.

What does my counselor do?
Counselors work with students to help them with any personal difficulties they may experience while studying at the PI.

How do I find out who my counselor is?
Counselors are available on both campuses from Sunday to Thursday starting 7:30 till 3:30. You can contact them by e-mail counselors@pi.ac.ae or phone 02- 6075011. You can also visit them in their offices in the ILC Bu Hasa and Arzanah.

Do I have the same advisor and counselor when I transfer to freshman?
Your advisor will be a member of faculty from the department in which you are studying. The same counselors are available to all students at the PI.
