20/Feb/2011:  PI Petroleum Engineering student Mr. Arsalan Arshad Ansari won the recent Marrs International Spelling Bee Contest.

Mr. Arsalan Arshad Ansari, undergraduate student from Petroleum Engineering Department of the PI, has earned the first position and won US$ 4,444 at the recent Marrs International Spelling Bee Contest. The contest was organized by Cambridge University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on February 12, 2011.  Mr. Arsalan will use the prize money towards his academic pursuits at the PI. 

The competition is held by the Cambridge University and it usually takes 1.5 - 2 years to complete. It starts at district level, goes up to state level, then to the national (continent) level and finally to the international level. The finalists of each country compete in the international level where students of all nationalities participate. There are approximately 15-20 students competing in the international level.

The competition mainly comprises of different rounds which consist of some contests related to the vocabulary and English language ability of a student. For example: synonyms/antonyms, word meanings, pronunciation based on the phonetic symbols etc., where all the words are taken from the Cambridge Advanced level dictionary.
