19-22/04/2010: Dr Gabor Takacs of the Petroleum Engineering Department presents paper at the Southwestern Petroleum Short Course held in Lubbock, Texas.

The “Southwestern Petroleum Short Course” held in Lubbock, Texas, is a yearly event focusing on production and drilling engineering topics in the West Texas area, one of the main oil producing regions in the USA. This year's event was the 57th in a row that attracted more than 500 professionals from all over the world who attended more than 30 presentations. Dr. Takacs is a regular author at the conference and presented his first paper at the Short Course 22 years ago.

Dr Takacs’ presentation “Use of NODAL Techniques to Identify and Eliminate the Harmful Effects of Production Chokes on ESP Wells” dealt with the problem field engineers face when inaccurate or insufficient well performance data prohibit the proper design of an ESP installation. In such cases, ESP pumps with higher than required capacities are run and the easiest correction is the use of surface chokes. Such chokes, however, exert unnecessary load on the pump and cause a considerable waste of input energy. The paper investigates the problems associated with surface chokes and selects the proper parameters of the necessary VSD unit.
