The library is pleased to announce two training sessions on how to use the ISI Thomson Web of Knowledge database.  As you may know the library has recently obtained a site license to the ISI Thomson Web of Knowledge database.  It is available on campus only from the library’s intranet home page (type the word yourlib in the browser).  Mr. Jefrey Clovis, Director of Thomson Scientific, will lead the presentation.  Two classes will be available for PI faculty and staff on Wednesday, November 14.

The first class will take place from 9 am to 11:30 am.  It will be repeated in the afternoon from 1:00 to 3:30.  Both presentations will take place at Habshan Library’s instruction room (5019).  Seating is limited to 24 and availability is on a first come first serve basis.  Refreshments will be available.  Below is the program’s schedule.

Introduction

  • Brief history of Thomson Scientific and the ISI Web of Knowledge (WOK).  It is the platform that hosts the various ISI products such as Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports, and EndNote.
  • Introduction to the different products available on the ISI Web of Knowledge platform
  • Report on the research trends in the UAE and comparison to other Middle-Eastern and European Countries

Web of Science

  • Key Benefits of using Web of Science (WOS).  It is a large bibliographic database of articles published in the sciences.  Citations include the number of reference used in articles and the number of times articles have been cited.   
  • Brief overview of Thomson Scientific’s journal selection policy
  • Training on the Web of Science interface including a case study search

ISI Web of Knowledge

  • Journal Citation Reports (JCR).  It is a standardized authority for presenting quantifiable statistical data to evaluate journals in several impact factors such as:  impact and influence factor; median impact factor, and aggregated cited half-life
  • EndNote Web is a bibliographic tool that allows users to manage their references and organize citations from articles using a range of style guides.
