02-06.06: Trip Report for Attendance at Petroleum Engineering Summer School - Dubrovnik, Croatia.

The interactive seminar and workshop entitled “Petroleum Engineering Summer School” has been organized by the University of Zagreb, Croatia, for the last twenty years. The event is incorporated into the academic post-graduate program of the “Inter-University Centre” (IUC) in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The IUC is an independent international center for advanced studies and has 160 member institutions (universities as well as research institutes) from 42 countries worldwide.

The PESS (Petroleum Engineering Summer School) during its two decades long history organized more than 30 workshops in the field of upstream petroleum engineering in order to promote the exchange of knowledge at academic and industrial level. The topic selected for the 2008 event was “Production Operations – Artificial Lift” and I was nominated as Co-Director and principal presenter of the program and had the responsibility to develop the program, conducting lectures and moderate panel discussions.

During the 5-day program I delivered advanced courses on the three most important kinds of artificial lift methods: gas lifting, sucker-rod pumping and electrical submersible pumping. The topics discussed included advanced design and analysis of the most preferred versions of artificial lifting of oil wells. The audience comprised more than 60 attendees from around ten countries. Both the formal training and the interactive discussion sessions were met with the satisfaction of the people attended.

The PESS (Petroleum Engineering Summer School) being a recurrent and highly esteemed petroleum engineering interactive seminar and workshop in Europe, my contribution as Co-Director and principal presenter of the event gave The Petroleum Institute a significant exposure to the European petroleum industry and the postgraduate training scene.
