08/Dec/2011: WISE students win ‘Best Poster’ award at the 20th World Petroleum Congress, Doha, Qatar

Two of the Petroleum Institute’s WISE Program Juniors, Petroleum Geosciences student Yasmin Abu Hijleh and Petroleum Engineering student Safa AbdulKareem won 4th place at the World Petroleum Congress Excellence Awards for Youth, in the Best Paper/Poster Session Category. The Congress, which is held every three years, took place from December 4th – 8th 2011 in Doha, Qatar. The students gave their poster presentation in the dedicated Digital Poster Plaza. They won 4th place from over 200 submissions, and this achievement was recognized by the award of a certificate and cash prize. 

Yasmin and Safa’s poster was entitled “On the brink: Professional career expectations of young women entering the petroleum oil and gas industry”.  The students were advised by faculty members Laura Lau and Richard Lau, Associate Head Librarian Vanessa Middleton and WISE Program Director Dr Nadia Al Hasani. 

The World Petroleum Congress is an excellent occasion for students and young professionals to present their research to their peers and industry experts. It also provides participants with an opportunity to learn about the latest developments, issues and industry concerns from experts in the field, and it provides an excellent venue for networking.
